The week ahead: York County Resolves Commemoration, Good Shot Judy, ice cream socials

A week filled with history events, live music and family-friendly activities is in store for the Historic Triangle.


Historic Yorktown will continue its VA250 celebrations with the 1774 York County Resolves Commemoration. The event honors the brave citizens of York County who gathered at the Swan Tavern on July 18, 1775, to take a stand against British tyranny. 


On the music scene, the Midtown Row concert series will return with high-octane swing band Good Shot Judy.


Country hits from the 90's era will fill the air in Yorktown as The Nashville Nights Band take the stage in the Sounds of Summer Concert Series.


Midnight Rain, a Taylor Swift tribute band, will perform in the Port Warwick Summer Concert Series.


Bruton Parish Church will host a candlelight Flute & Organ Recital featuring Sean Arawjo, flutist and director of Flute Frenzy, along with organist Rebecca Davy. Grammy-award-winning music artist Colbie Caillat will perform at Busch Gardens.


Additional highlights this week include Ice Cream with a Cop in James City County, a Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Social hosted by the Williamsburg Police Department and a VIMS scientist-led Tree Identification tour in Historic Yorktown.


The Merchants Square 2025 Movie Series will close out the weekend on Sunday evening with a showing of "Footloose."

CONVERSATION

  • Coloring & Conversation | Yorktown Library | Stop by Yorktown Library on the second Monday of each month for coloring, conversation and light snacks. No registration required. Designed for adults and teens accompanied by an adult. Free. 1 - 2:30 pm. 

WELLNESS

  • Thriving Together: Cancer Fitness & Wellness Series | James City County Recreation Center | This monthly program is designed to support individuals impacted by cancer in their journey to fitness and wellness. It provides a safe, inclusive space for survivors and those currently undergoing treatment. Free. 3:45 - 4:30 pm. 

TEENS

  • Teen Creative Writing | Williamsburg Library | Teens ages 13-18 are invited to explore their voice through creative writing in a relaxed, supportive environment. No registration needed. Free. 6 - 8 pm.

KIDS

  • Terrific Tuesdays | James City County Library | Kids will enjoy the summer sun after puppet storytime with lawn toys and other outdoor games. All ages; weather permitting. Free. 10:30 am - 12 pm. 


  • Ice Cream with a Cop | Norge Bazaar Ice Cream Shop | Community members are invited to stop in to chat with JCCPD officers and civilian staff from the Community Services Unit. Bring your questions and learn about the department's services. Children will receive a free scoop of ice cream courtesy of Norge Bazaar. Rain or shine. Free. 3 - 4 pm. 


SENIORS

  • Topics on Downsizing | Stryker Center | The Memorie Group presents an informative series designed to help participants navigate their downsizing journey with expert guidance and a supportive community. This month's topic is "Preparing Your Home for Aging in Place." Whether you're planning ahead or supporting a loved one, this session offers practical guidance, compassionate expertise and actionable resources. Free. 2 - 3 pm. 


TEENS

  • Teen Tuesday | James City County Library | Join other teens for STEAM-themed learning and fun, every Tuesday. For ages 13 - 18. Free. 10 am - 12 pm.


FILM

  • Art House CafĂ©: "The Short Game" | Williamsburg Library | This film series brings an art house flavor to your Tuesdays, with special guests who are film experts and a discussion after the film. This week's feature is "The Short Game," a lighthearted documentary that follows the best 7-year-old golfers from across the globe as they compete to become the world champion.   • Tree Identification in the Village | Grace Episcopal Church | Yorktown | Join a VIMS conservation scientist for a tour of Historic Yorktown's trees. Free and open to the public. Register here. 6:30 - 8 pm. 

KIDS

  • Tampa Taiko | Williamsburg Regional Libraries | Children are invited to attend a fun, interactive program that covers the history of taiko, the music of Japan. For ages 6-12. Space is limited; reserve a ticket at the Youth Services desk starting 30 minutes before the program. This event will be held at James City County Library from 10 am - 11 am and Williamsburg Library from 1 - 2 pm. Free

HISTORY

  • Explore the Declaration of Independence | Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg | Explore the Declaration of Independence through objects on exhibit in this guided tour. Free and open to the public. 2 - 2:45 pm. 

LIVE MUSIC

  • Music In Midtown: Good Shot Judy | Midtown Row | The Mid-Atlantic's #1 high-octane swing band, Good Shot Judy, will perform on the Midtown Row Village Green on July 16. Lawn chairs recommended. Leashed dogs welcome. Free. 6 - 8 pm. 


  • Port Warwick Summer Concert Series: Midnight Rain| William Styron Square | The 2025 Port Warwick Concert Series runs on Wednesday evenings through August 27. This week's concert features Midnight Rain, a Taylor Swift tribute band. Free. 6 - 9 pm.

  • Meet Valerie Tripp: American Girl Book Author | Hennage Auditorium | Colonial Williamsburg | Meet Valerie Tripp, author of American Girl books about Maryellen, Molly, Kit, Samantha, Josefina and Williamsburg's own Felicity Merriman. Bring your books to be signed. Valerie will discuss how Colonial Williamsburg provided her with inspiration while writing Felicity's stories. Tickets are $20 for adults and children 5 and up, $10 for children under 5.

  • Plein Air Painting Workshop | Jamestown Settlement | Children are invited to find their favorite spot at Jamestown Settlement and create a plein art print to take home.  Tickets are $12. 10 am - 1 pm.

  • Throwback Thursday: "Judgment at Nuremberg" | Williamsburg Library Theatre | This series screens classic films for an adult audience. This week's feature is "Judgment at Nuremberg," a drama about the 1947 trial of four Nazi judges for crimes against humanity.   • Sounds of Summer Concert Series: The Nashville Nights Band | Riverwalk Landing | Yorktown's Sounds of Summer Concert Series runs every Thursday evening through August 14. This week, The Nashville Night Band performs. The group is comprised of seasoned musicians who specialize in the music of the 90s country era. Free. 6:30 - 9 pm.

  • Organ Recital - Dr. JanEl Will | Enjoy a recital of 18th-century music presented by Dr. JanEl Will, organist at Bruton Parish Church. Free; donations gratefully accepted. 8 - 9 pm.

  • 1774 York County Resolves Commemoration | Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters & Petite CafĂ© | Honor the bold citizens of York County who gathered at the Swan Tavern on July 18, 1775, to take a stand against British taxes and tyranny. Meet at Mobjack Bay, then march in a procession to the Thomas Nelson house for a moving commemorative program. A reception at Mobjack will conclude the event. 

KIDS & FAMILIES

  • Fun Fridays | Williamsburg Library | Children are invited to enjoy games, activities and snacks outside. Weather permitting; all ages welcome. Free. 10:30 am - 12 pm. 

  • Mad Science | Tabb Library | Kids will discover the difference between magic and science during this fun, educational program. Designed for children and accompanying adults. Free. 10:15 - 11:30 am. 

  • The Bird Migration Challenge | James City County Library | Master Naturalists will share ways to help birds during their migration journey. For ages 7-12. Space is limited; reserve a ticket at the Youth Services desk starting 30 minutes before the program. Free. 2 - 3 pm. 

  • Pajama Jam: Under the Sea | Virginia Living Museum | Kids and families are invited to wear their coziest pajamas for a night of ocean-inspired fun featuring a live DJ, underwater-themed crafts, light snacks and fun activities for kids of all ages. Tickets are $15 if purchased in advance, $18 on the day of the event. Discounted tickets are available for members. 6 - 8 pm. 

  • Forest Explorers Friday | Freedom Park | Children will participate in bat-themed games and crafts, attend a bat talk and explore the meadow and Free Black Settlement. Attendees will learn about bats' foraging habits and benefits to humans. For all ages and families. Free. 7:30 - 9 pm.

  • Turtle Census | Virginia Living Museum | Assist with the annual Turtle Census project. Each summer, VLM staff live-captures turtles to monitor the species in our local waterway. No prior training or experience is needed. The cost is $30 ($25 for non-members). 9 - 11:30 am. 


  • Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Social | 416 Prince George St. | Children 12 and under are invited to enjoy a free ice cream cone while mingling with Williamsburg police officers. Free. 11 am - 1 pm. 


  • Walk & Talk: Insects | New Quarter Park | Participate in a guided nature walk while learning about insects. Free and open to the public. 10 am - 12 pm. 


  • Summer Ice Cream Social | Tradition Brewing Co. | Newport News | This fun event features sweet treats for the whole family, including kids, adults and even the dogs. No reservations needed. Free. 1 - 5 pm.

  • Yorktown Market Days | Riverwalk Landing | Enjoy beautiful views of the York River while shopping for a wide variety of items, such as seasonal produce, fresh baked goods, intricate glassware and beautiful woodwork. This week, Ami Baker will perform on the Riverwalk Landing Stage. Free admission. 8 am - 12 pm.


  • Williamsburg Farmers Market | Merchants Square | The Williamsburg Farmers Market, founded in 2002, features the finest Virginia-grown and Virginia-made produce, plants and products. The event also features live music and children's programming. Free admission. 8 am - 12 pm.


  • Toano Open Air Market | 7891 Richmond Road | Toano | Shop from various vendors selling their finest products. Located on the Village Green near Hohl. Free admission. 9 am - 12 pm. 


  • Hilton Village Farmers Market | 10260 Warwick Blvd | Historic Hilton Village's weekly market on Main is held every Saturday, year-round. Free admission. 9 am - 12 pm. 


NATURE

  • Fossil Frenzy | Williamsburg | Discover relics of early whales, porpoises, sharks and more while hiking to a fossil beach. Included with standard park admission. Call the park for reservations. 10 am - 12 pm. 


HISTORY

  • "We Shall Carry On" | Williamsburg Library | Learn about the many chanllenges World War II brought to Williamsburg, including a new focus for Colonial Williamsburg's educational and hospitality initiatives. Free. 2 - 3 pm. 


KIDS & FAMILIES

  • Tots & Trains | Lee Hall Dept | This fun event features a train-themed story and craft, as well as a Chessie the Cat themed puppet show. Admission is $3/child. Adults are free. Adults who wish to visit the rest of the museum should purchase regular admission tickets. 10 - 11 am. 


  • T.rex Trek | Virginia Living Museum | Newport News | During select times, VLM's animatronic T. rex will make a surprise appearance on the museum grounds for a quick trek, allowing for unforgettable photo ops. Included with museum admission. 10:30 - 11 am. 


  • Storytime & Craft | James City County Library | Children will listen to stories and make a craft during this storytime series. Reserve a ticket at the Youth Services desk starting 30 minutes before the program begins. Free. 2 - 3 pm.

  • Colbie Caillat | Busch Gardens | Grammy-winner music artist Colbie Caillat, who has over 15 billion streams from hits like "Realize," "Lucky" and "Buddy," will perform at Busch Gardens on Saturday. The concert is included with park admission. 7 pm.

In the Region

  • Virginia Symphony Orchestra in the Park | Town Point Park | Norfolk | Enjoy an evening of music by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. This event is sponsored by the Patricia and Douglas Perry Foundation. Gourmet artisan food and beverages will be available for purchase. Show starts at 8:30, park opens at 6 for pre-concert picnicking. Free
