Fwd: ATR Urges Virginia Candidates to Support Repeal of Gov. McDonnell's Tax ...

Subj: ATR Urges Virginia Candidates to Support Repeal of Gov. McDonnell's Tax Hike

http://www.atr.org/atr-urges-virginia-candidates-support-repeal-a7627

May 16, 2013

Dear Candidate,

Just a few days ago, Governor Bob McDonnell signed into law the largest tax increase in the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia. With a price tag of at least $5.9 billion, the tax hike will undeniably harm Virginia's economy, meaning less money in taxpayers' wallets and less jobs for Virginians seeking work. I urge all candidates for state-wide office and the House of Delegates to support the repeal of this onerous burden on taxpayers.

A coalition of spending interests and their political allies – including Governor Bob McDonnell, Speaker Bill Howell, Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment, Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw, and Senator Frank Wagner – are working hard to fleece the taxpayers of Virginia. The repeal of HB 2313, Governor McDonnell's tax hike, would send a message to Virginia voters and taxpayers that you are serious about protecting their interests, not the special interest spending lobby in Richmond.

With the tax hike now law, Virginians will see hikes in their diesel fuel taxes and the gas tax will rise with higher gas prices and inflation. Residents of Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads will see increases in the local sales tax from 5 to 6 percent and Northern Virginia will see additional increases in taxes on homes sales, and increased hotel taxes. The rest of the state will experience a sales tax hike from 5 to 5.3 percent. Eventually, every region of Virginia could be subject to a 6 percent sales hike.

In addition, the legislation puts into place a regime set to collect internet sales taxes if Congress passes the Marketplace Fairness Act – currently in the House of Representatives. If Congress is unable to pass an internet sales tax bill, Virginia residents will see fuel taxes raised even higher to make up for the promised tax collections. Even worse, the Marketplace Fairness Act would subject Virginia's small businesses to over 9,000 taxing jurisdictions in all fifty states.  Imagine a small business man from Virginia having to appear in a tax court in cash strapped California or Illinois.

In the end, Governor McDonnell's tax hike is nothing more than a transfer of money from the taxpayers pocket to the spending interests in Richmond. The tax hike must be repealed.

This burdensome and economically destructive tax hike won't relieve congestion on Virginia roads, it won't pave Virginia's roads, and it won't fill the pot holes. It will line the pockets of the spending interests and lobbyists in Richmond. This tax hike must be repealed.

As a candidate for elected office in the Commonwealth of Virginia, I urge you to publically call for and work to repeal HB 2313, Governor McDonnell's $5.9 billion tax increase.

Onward,

Middle Passage Committee ceremony; Board of Building Code Appeals vacancies

Yorktown Middle Passage Committee to honor
African Ancestry on Memorial Day

May 13, 2013

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

The Yorktown Middle Passage Committee will host a remembrance ceremony and wayside sign dedication on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, at 8 a.m., to honor the 2,000,000 Africans who died in the Middle Passage and the 500,000 enslaved survivors and their descendants who helped build our nation.  The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes and will include presentations and talks by representatives of the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe, historian Russell B. Hopson, Dr. and Mrs. P.B. Welbeck, local clergy, and the unveiling of the sign by Colonial National Historical Park superintendent Dan Smith.
Since being contacted in January 2012 by Ann Chinn, executive director, facilitator, and founder of Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project, representatives of York County and the National Park Service at Colonial National Historical Park have been conducting extensive research on a little-known but highly significant part of Yorktown history: the human slave trade.
In 1691, the Virginia Assembly established Yorktown as the main port of entry for Williamsburg, Virginia's colonial capital.  From 1698 to 1750, over 80 percent of imported Africans were disembarked on the shores of the York and Rappahannock Rivers with over 31,000 Africans entering the York River District between 1698 and 1771.
For more than 350 years, approximately 12 million Africans were transported across the Atlantic Ocean.  A staggering two million died during the passage.  Of the 10 million who survived, at least 500,000 arrived between 1619 and 1860 in what is now the United States of America.
The Port Markers Project was established to honor the millions of Africans who perished in the transatlantic human trade voyages. The organization plans to hold remembrance ceremonies and place markers at 175 ports in North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Europe to remember all those who perished during the ocean crossings. Following a February 2012 meeting with Ms. Chinn, leaders of many local historical organizations were contacted to solicit their participation in forming a local committee to work with the Port Markers Project to recognize Yorktown as one of five major ports in Virginia, along with Fredericksburg, Hampton, Jamestown and Richmond, to acknowledge the lives and freedoms lost during that time in history.  As a result, the Yorktown Middle Passage Committee was formed.
The Committee is co-chaired by Ms. Lois Winter, chairman of the York County Historical Committee, and Mr. William "Chris" Leonard, assistant professor, Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University. Other members of the Committee include:

• Edward Ayres, historian, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation
• Wayne Dawkins, assistant professor, Hampton University SHSJC
• Diane Depew, supervisory park ranger, Colonial National Historical Park
• Edith M. Heard, Lemon Project/JCCT/BHS Alumni
• Russell B. Hopson, Surry Historical Society/AAHGS
• Joseph W. Jenkins, president, Surry African American Heritage Society
• Louis Malon, director of preservation services, Preservation Virginia
• Sheryl K. Mays, director of public programs and operations, Historic Jamestowne
• David J. Meredith, community programs specialist, York County
• Liz Montgomery, president, Virginia African American Forum
• Amy M. Parker, senior planner, York County
• Cassie Phillips, Shiloh Baptist Church, African American Affairs Ministry
• Winston Phillips, Shiloh Baptist Church, African American Affairs Ministry
• Dan Smith, superintendent, Colonial National Historical Park

This event is free and open to the public.  Comte de Grasse Street; Water Street between Comte de Grasse and Read Street; and the Yorktown beach between Comte de Grasse and Read Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.  The Beach Picnic parking area, below the Yorktown Monument at the east end of Water Street, will be closed for event parking only during this same time and will reopen to the general public immediately after the ceremony.
For more information about the ceremony, call (757) 898-0782.

Tom Gear takes EW Jackson to the Woodshed - "On the Record"

Dear Republican Friends,

As many people know when they run for public office, the public has a right to full disclosure of their background. Everytime I ran I faced every question honestly and to the point. It seems that E W Jackson Sr. feels these rules do not apply to his candidacy. While I understand tough times, believe me I do, I also know that only thing that matters is EW Jackson Sr. is running to represent our Party as its nominee for Lt. Governor.

I asked EW Jackson, Sr to answer the following questions for the public record on May 5, 2013 and at the time of writing this email he has not responded.

1) We have, without question, been through some of the toughest economic times our Country has ever experienced. That being said, it has been brought to my attention that you have had multiple bankruptcies, garnishments and tax liens. Is this true or just vicious negative campaigning?

It seems others feel the same as I do and a group called VA TRUTH documented the list of bankrupcties and they can be seen by clicking here.  As I said above there can be a good reason for asking for relief of debt but not disclosing this to the voters made me wonder what else is out there on EW Jackson. A simple online investigation showed the following;

1) On May 8, 2012, EW Jackson Sr. was issued a warrant in debt for not paying his personal property taxes.

2) On September 9, 2011, EW Jackson Sr. was issued a warrant in debt for a lawsuit involving his church.

3) On September 2, 2008, EW Jackson Sr. was issued a garnishment from a lawsuit involving his church.

4) On April 6, 2007, EW Jackson Sr. was served a unlawful detainer from a lawsuit involving his church.

2) If these accusations are true how would you be able to defend yourself in a General Election as the Republican nominee for Lt Governor against attacks from that surely occur from Democrats on your campaign? Again I ask if these accusations are true, how much damage will these unmerciful liberal Democrat attacks have on our Republican ticket?

Well folks anyone going to this convention has enough political savvy to know that this will come up again and again from the opposition in the general election. It will be twisted and tied, taken out of context and spun unmercifully. And if anyone thinks it won't effect our statewide ticket than they have not been keeping up with the attacks on Governor  McDonnell and AG Ken Cuccinelli, our nominee for Governor. Whats even more telling, Jackson is already trying to react and minimize these finanacial problems. In a supporter call just last night, Jackson told supporters his story on those bankruptices but failed to mention the financial problems as recent as May 8, 2012.

3) In 2002, Hampton Roads residents were faced with the YES campaign, many local conservative voices joined forces and created the kNOw campaign to fight an unelected bureaucracy which would be given the power to tax without constitutional oversight. It is my understanding you were a Hampton Roads resident during that period of time. Could you give me a credible reason why you did not assist us in the effort to defeat that measure?

4) In 2006, Governor Kaine followed his predecessor Mark Warner and tried to raise taxes on all Virginians. I am curious why during those two administrations we never heard you speak against or join our coalition to fight both democrat Governors and their extreme tax and spend initiatives?

I am taking these two questions and answering them together for the readers of this editorial. I have done some research and yes EW Jackson Sr has been doing many things but without great focus on the citizens of Hampton Roads or for Virginians. As far as I am concerned EW Jackson's lack of involvement during those significant battles for Liberty troubles me greatly. One has to wonder if being involved in the last year and half is only because of his abitions to hold statewide office.

5) In 2012, you ran an unsuccessful campaign for US Senate, during your primary campaign you criticized Governor George Allen harshly for his record. Knowing that you had no chance in succeeding in this ambitious attempt, would you have been more reserved in your criticism? Especially since you became an advocate for George Allen's election after your loss.

I will just say to answer this without a response from EW Jackson is that in the US Senate primary EW Jackson Sr came in last place behind Delegate Bob Marshall. I received an email after the general election of 2012 and EW Jackson had once again became a critic of George Allen and the "establishment" ticket. Flip flopping does not impress me at all and this is a serious sign of  political weakness. You either stand behind your principles without reservation or you don't. Btw folks, you have to be able to win and bring something to the table this year. With such a poor performance in statewide primary I do not see how EW can win or what he brings to the table.

I call it like I see it folks and what I see is a fine public speaker, commentator and man of the cloth. But when the sole subject is about who can be the best person to represent our Party as Lt Governor to win November, it is not EW Jackson Sr.

  • The financial baggage already present will be enough but there are other reasons. EW finished with 4.7% of the US Senate Primary votes, other candidates who have lost like this learn they can't win. I am not sure why EW thinks he can.
  • He can't raise the money needed to even run in this convention and still has US Senate race debt. Like it or not you have to be able to raise dollars and to date EW Jackson fails in that category.
  • Lastly, he has no succinct knowledge of State government and will be crushed in the tough questions being asked this year.

I wish you all the best and will be continuing the candidate questions  "On the Record" over the next few days before the convention. I hope you will continue to read as we take em all to the Woodshed if need be.

Best regards,

Tom Gear

Great Causes

Join Our Campaign | Make a Contribution

Friend:

Tomorrow morning I will be privileged to help kick off the Virginia Run for the Fallen from Fort Story in Virginia Beach to Arlington. Participants will be running through Virginia for three days in support of our Gold Star Families. What an honor it will be to sing the National Anthem for these runners and support the cause they are engaged in.

As I mentioned in my last communication about the vision I have for our Virginia, we must always honor our veterans and their families for their sacrifice and service. In Gold Star Families, the ultimate sacrifice has been made by a member of their family. Please go to Virginia Run for the Fallen and add your support for this cause.

Over the past four decades I have been privileged to minister in various ways in the urban areas of South Richmond and in Fulton Hill, where I also operated two businesses for a while. These are two of Richmond's more economically strained areas. Through those years I have met and worked with many brothers and sisters in Christ who have labored faithfully. I am thankful that so many of them who serve as pastors and shepherds of their respective congregations have offered letters of written endorsement for my candidacy for Lt. Governor.

These endorsements come from pastors in Richmond, Fredericksburg and Greater Hampton Roads, including Bishop Gerald Glenn, Pastor Victor Torres, Pastor Steve Parsons, Pastor Lonnie Stinson, Apostle Leon Benjamin, Reverend Michael Hirsch, and more. Throughout the years, they have come to know me well and happily offer their support. We will need the support they can provide our campaign this Fall in their respective communities.

We have a strong blend of support from around the Commonwealth. Convention Delegates want to nominate a candidate they can count on to win and serve effectively as their Lt. Governor. They will want to choose the candidate with a solid, faithful, 25+ year conservative record in which they can place their confidence in how he will conduct himself in office. I offer myself as that candidate. One whose record in and and out of office has been scrutinized and respected by the electorate through 10 successful elections.

I ask for your vote on the first ballot, on Saturday, May 18th (hyperlink to parties convention info page). If you have firmly committed to another I ask for your support on subsequent ballots. In nominating me as the Republican Party's candidate for Lt. Governor, you are nominating the candidate who can best run, win and serve. The candidate who will honor your trust and be faithful in service.

Let me know of your support, and join us at my Hospitality Suite at the Liberty Lounge, in the lobby of the Downtown Marriott on the evening of May 17th. I look forward to seeing you, and am forever grateful for the privilege of service.

God Bless,
Signature
Steve Martin

P.S. Pregnancy Counseling Centers around Virginia are doing a most important work. Please visit them and offer your assistance, as able. God bless you for your sacrificial service.
