Dear Patriot,
Presidential politics dominated the weekend news but there was a piece of news that came out on Friday that you should be extremely proud of! Friday is known as trash day in the political media world because that is when politicians release news they hope will not generate a lot of attention. Well, tucked away in the Friday trash was a nugget about the United States Postal Service (USPS) releasing its plan to reduce its more than $8 billion annual deficit. Its proposed plan incorporates many of the measures in Congressman Darrell Issa’s “Postal Reform Act,” that together we have been championing.
Over the last month we have been telling you about the Postal Reform Act and asking you to contact your elected representatives in Washington and encourage them to support this little-known piece of legislation. Our coalition is incredibly active and made a strong show of force by sending nearly 115,000 letters to Congress! Friday, we found out the result of those letters and we are so excited to share with you the impact that you had on actual policy by taking a few minutes to use our state-of-the-art contact system.
Thanks to our contacts inside Washington, we can share with you how this process worked. First, we teamed with Congressman Issa to support a relatively unknown piece of legislation that applied common sense reform to the USPS. Our team researched the bill and shared it with you, and you responded by flooding the House and Senate with letters of support. The House and Senate took notice because they did not anticipate the high volume of contacts they were receiving on a bill that had not received any significant media attention. The United Postal Workers Union panicked and released a misleading national ad campaign claiming that the USPS did not cost taxpayers anything except the cost of postage. The ad campaign was almost immediately discredited by the simple fact that the USPS runs a deficit of more than $8 billion annually. As the letters continued to pour in, spooked lawmakers sent word to the USPS that they would be unable to block a piece of legislation that had already become incredibly popular despite receiving no media attention. So, the USPS announced a plan to address its budget, hoping it could avoid the circus of having Congress do it instead.
What it all boils down to is this: because of your support for this piece of legislation, it went from
obscurity to at least partial implementation in a political blink of an eye! Our coalition forced a bloated federal bureaucracy to address its enormous budget deficit, and we should all feel incredibly proud! It is not too late to participate in this campaign or in the other projects we are working on by taking
just a couple of minutes and contacting your elected representatives! *Note: A contribution is not required to use the system, but your generous contributions allow us to offer this service free-of-charge to anyone willing to participate.
The second tremendous victory we want to share with you regards the national ad campaign we are developing to combat the scurrilous attacks on Tea Party activists. Yesterday, we were more than $20,000 short of the $50,000 that we needed to get the ads produced. After yesterday’s email, we not only reached our goal, we flew past it! Now, we not only have all the money we need to produce the ads, but we have a sizeable down payment to start purchasing airtime once the ads are completed! We promised to send out all the names of the Patriot Hero Contributors who gave at least $100 as part of this campaign; however, when we exported them into our email provider they warned us that it would cause this email to find its way into a lot of junk mail folders because of its size! To manage this issue, we will be including a list of the Patriot Hero Contributors at the end of each email until each Patriot Hero has been given the credit so deeply deserved. If you would like to have your name included on that list, please make a generous contribution below!
Sincerely,
