Ft. Monroe and the Contraband of War Presented by Bill Fetsko and Bill Sullivan Saturday, March 23, 2013 9:10-10:00 a.m. During the Civil War, Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia remained in Union hands and became a destination for thousands of enslaved African Americans to claim their freedom. This "self-emancipation" complicates the common saying that "Lincoln freed the slaves."
