CSX will be upgrading the railroad crossing across Route 17 (see notice below). All lanes (north and south) will be closed for two days.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and CSX Railroad have announced that both the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 17 (
The closure is necessary to allow CSX crews to install a concrete at-grade crossing to replace the rough, uneven and deteriorated crossing that has been a source of complaints by motorists for several years. The work is being performed during the weekend to minimize the impact to traffic. Short duration lane closures may also be required during off-peak travel hours on Monday, April 16 to allow final completion and clean-up.
The following detours and special traffic restrictions will be in place during the closure:
· North and southbound truck traffic will be detoured around the closure via
· North and southbound passenger vehicle traffic will be detoured via Old York-Hampton Highway and Fort Eustis Boulevard extended; Passenger vehicle traffic should also consider using Fort Eustis Blvd, rather than the southern segments of Route 17, for access to or from Newport News and Interstate 64;
· Southbound through traffic on Old York-Hampton Highway will be blocked at the Allen Harris Drive / Old York Hampton Highway intersections; Motorists who normally travel southbound beyond that point, such as those from the Settler's Crossing, Harris Grove or Marlbank areas, should use Battle Road or Hornsbyville Road as alternate routes;
· Southbound traffic on
· Traffic signals at the Route 17/Fort Eustis Boulevard and Route 17/Old York-Hampton Highway intersections will be re-timed to give priority to traffic following the detour routes; VDOT will be monitoring and adjusting signal operations as necessary to optimize traffic flow;
· All residences and businesses between
Detour and portable message signs will be in place along Route 17 to alert motorists to the closure and to the alternate traffic routes and restrictions.
